THE REPUBLIC OF TURKEY

The modern Republic of Turkey was founded in 1923 after the Turkish War of Independence, which erupted as a result of the partitioning of the Ottoman Empire after its defeat in World War I. Mustafa Kemal, who later received the title Atatürk (Father of the Turks), led the independence movement.

Modernization and Integration with Western Countries

In 1923, Atatürk proclaimed the Republic of Turkey and became its first president. He implemented a series of reforms aimed at modernizing the country and pursued a course of integration with Western countries. One of the key reforms was the separation of Islam from the state, leading to the establishment of a secular republic. As part of the reforms, the sultanate and the caliphate were abolished, and European laws and an educational system were introduced. The Turkish language also underwent a reform, with the replacement of Arabic script with the Latin script. Women were granted equal rights with men, including the right to vote and receive education.

The Foundation of the Republic of Turkey in Numismatics

The foundation of the Republic of Turkey found its place in numismatics as well. New coins and banknotes were issued featuring the portrait of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, symbolizing a new era of independence and reforms. A new currency unit, the Turkish lira, was introduced, replacing the Ottoman kuruş. In the following years, in line with the ongoing reforms, coins and banknotes began to feature images of significant historical and cultural monuments of Turkey, as well as portraits of prominent figures of the country. This emphasized national identity and the desire to preserve the historical heritage. In our Numisnipe App, we have assembled a collection of coins issued in the year of the foundation of the Turkish Republic, as well as coins dedicated to the anniversaries of this significant event, so that you can capture an entire history of this great country in your album.

In 1938, after the death of Atatürk, İsmet İnönü came to power and continued to implement reforms. Turkey maintained neutrality during World War II and became a member of the United Nations in 1945. In the 1950s, Turkey transitioned to a multi-party system and became a member of NATO. Today, Turkey continues to develop and remains an important regional player and a member of international organizations.
